Solution Automates Maintenance for Patient Record Access for Healthcare Staff
In Canada, each province is responsible for the healthcare of its residents, for example, in British Columbia; the region is broken down into four major areas in terms of medical coverage. The healthcare provider responsible for the western coastal region, from Vancouver to Vella Coola, is Vancouver Coastal Health.
Keeping patient medical record information secure and current yet accessible to medical personnel across a vast healthcare network can be a daunting task. The man charged with ensuring this happens for Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is Ardiel Soeker. Ardiel has been with VCH for over ten years, currently in the role of technical lead for their NonStop systems and GE Centricity application.
“Our Nonstop server provides the repository for patient medical data, while the Centricity application from GE is the desktop client used by medical staff to access patient records,” Ardiel explained. “What we needed was an automated way to configure and support our network of over 2,500 PCs that access the NonStop , so we turned to Transaction Innovation Corporation (TIC) for help.”
VCH asked both GE and TIC to a meeting to discuss a solution for streamlining the Centricity terminal/HP NonStop configuration. At the time, this was a pilot implementation, so GE was brought in to validate the solution to be created by TIC. The idea was to replace the current time consuming manual process of configuring desktop clients, located at hospitals and clinics in the network, to interface with the NonStop. VCH system administrators needed a robust method for remote terminal configuration, designed to efficiently and accurately establish terminal information on the NonStop/GE system.
TIC created and implemented a solution that became their Auto Configurator product. This software automatically configures GE desktop clients to access NonStop server data via Web browser liminating what used to be a manual installation process, while at the same time providing IT support staff with remote network troubleshooting access.
“The TIC solution saves huge amounts of time (and therefore money) since we don’t need to dispatch support people to update each PC manually anymore, which cuts down on errors and allows us to change configurations “on the fly” as needed. Plus, Auto Configurator gives us troubleshooting access – so now our help desk can monitor and support users remotely – another huge time and money saver,” stated Ardiel.
